How to Install and Configure Windows NT 4.0 Dial-Up Networking

 

Section 1

 

To install Dial-Up Networking (DUN) and Remote Access Service (RAS) on your Windows NT 4.0-based computer, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Click Install. When you are prompted, type the location of the Windows NT 4.0 installation files.
  3. NOTE: If you are not prompted to install Dial-Up Networking, DUN and RAS have already been installed. Skip to Section 2: "Configuring Dial-Up Networking"

  4. If you have not installed an RAS-capable device, the Remote Access Setup program prompts you to invoke the Modem installer. Click Yes and follow the instructions to install a modem.
  5. In the list of RAS-capable devices, click the modem you just installed, and then click OK.
  6. Click Configure, click Dial Out Only, and then click OK.
  7. Click Network, click the check boxes of the protocols to use for your connection to select them, and then click OK.
  8. NOTE: The protocols that are currently installed are selected by default. If you choose a protocol that is not currently installed, you must install that protocol using the Network tool in Control Panel.

  9. Click Continue, and then click Restart to restart your computer and finish the installation.

NOTE: If you have installed a Service Pack on your Windows NT-based computer, you must reapply the Service Pack before restarting your computer.

 

 

Section 2

To configure Windows NT to connect to Network Konnection, Inc. using PPP, follow these steps:

  1. If the TCP/IP protocol is installed, you can proceed with step 2. If the TCP/IP protocol is not installed, double-click Network in Control Panel, click the Protocols tab, click Add, click TCP/IP Protocol, click OK, and then follow the instructions on your screen.
  2. In My Computer, double-click Dial-Up Networking.
  3. If you have run Dial-Up Networking before, click New to create a new phonebook entry. If this is the first time you have run Dial-Up Networking, you receive the following message:
  4. The phonebook is empty. Press OK to add an entry.

    Click OK.

  5. Under Name The New Phonebook Entry, type Network Konnection, and then click Next.
  6. Click the I Am Calling The Internet check box to select it, and then click Next.
  7. Under Phone Number, type 301-881-0414, click Next, and then click Finish.
  8. Click More, and then click Edit Entry And Modem Properties.
  9. Click the Server tab. Ensure that Dial-up Server Type is set to PPP, Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet.
  10. Click TCP/IP Settings, modify the settings to match the settings provided on your configuration sheet, and then click OK.
  11. Click OK, and then click Dial to connect to Network Konnection.
  12. Type, in lowercase, your user name and password for your Internet account, clear the Domain box, and then click OK.
