Configuring MacTCP and Config PPP
You should print this document for easy reference while configuring MacTCP and Config PPP. For purposes of this document, information that you type in is shown set off by " ". Do not actually type " " around your text. This document assumes you know basic Macintosh operations such as opening and closing windows and selecting buttons and boxes, etc.
II. Configuring Config PPP
Macintosh sytems vary depending on their age and operating system. The two basic internet-capable systems are either "MacTCP plus FreePPP" or "Open Transport (TCP/IP) plus PPP".
MacPPP/FreePPP is freeware, but the others are part of the operating system. If you have a very old system and don't have either a MacTCP or a TCP/IP control panel, you need a system upgrade before going any further.
The Mac OS 8 Instructions may be required if you have a recently purchased Mac, or have upgraded.
FreePPP is available on the uniserver. However, the current version is quite different from the version these notes were prepared from - and the notes now apply only to the older versions.
There are three components of FreePPP.
"Config PPP" and "PPP". These should be located in the Control panels
and Extensions folders respectively of the System folder.
"PPP Preferences". This should be located in the Extensions folder of the System
folder.
Restart your Mac before Proceeding.
Open MacTcp from the Control Panels. Select PPP. Click the "More.." button.
Configuration should like something like this
(text rather than a snapshot, to allow viewing from a text browser):
Obtain Address IP Address
o Manually Class A Address 128.0.0.0
* Server Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
o Dynamically
Routing Information
Gateway Address
0.0.0.0 Domain Name Server Information

Subnet mask - this is the default when class A is selected. If you can
change it using the 'slider' underneath it, 255.255.255.255 is suggested.
Close MacTCP
Open TCP/IP from the Control Panels. The fields should be set thus:

63.140.32.4
Open Config PPP from the Control Panels. Click on the Config button. There may be considerable variation in the correct contents of the fields depending on your modem. The following is suggested for a 28.8K modem.
Please note: the phone number suggested is the most reliable for a first attempt. However, it is a time-charged number (30 cents per hour) nad may not be appropriate for long web-browsing sessions. Other numbers are 93813054 and 93476334.
